Providing Effective Legal Strategies

Social circles are affected by your divorce, too: Choosing sides

Divorces are hard for everyone in the family, not just the couple who is separating. Divorces have an effect on parents, grandparents, children, aunts and uncles. Others may be affected by the decision as well, worrying about how the separation could affect their friendships or social circles.

As someone who is friends with your in-laws and spouse despite the decision to divorce, you may be able to maintain those relationships. However, don't be surprised if people seem like they choose sides. In this scenario, people, especially friends and relatives, may feel that they need to side with their loved ones or those they feel closest to.

How can you handle the social rejection of a divorce?

If you do end up facing rejection as a result of the divorce, don't take it personally. In many cases, these people do feel close to you and may want to be a part of your life in the future, but now isn't the time where they feel they can do so. Sometimes, time is what's necessary to close wounds and allow enough distance from the divorce to give people the opportunity to reconnect.

In the meantime, it's a good idea to start branching out, meeting new people and extending your life into other areas. If you meet new people, have new hobbies and are focused on your own happiness and health, you may not notice as much of the rejection that you'd otherwise be focused on.

These are some things to consider about the social aspects of divorce. It can be hard, but you will get through it.
