Stepparent Adoption

Uniting Families Through Stepparent Adoption

Adopting your stepchildren makes you the legal parent of your spouse's children from another relationship. Many families see stepparent adoption as a way to unite a family emotionally as well as legally. It also protects the children from the prospect of having to spend time with a parent who has been largely absent from their lives.

Experienced Adoption Lawyer

At the Law Offices of Stephen J. Bedor, we have more than 25 years of experience helping blended families throughout the Portland area legally become one through stepparent adoption.

Terminating the Other Parent's Rights

To adopt your spouse's child, you first must obtain the consent of your spouse and the child's other parent. The other parent must agree to a permanent termination of his or her parental rights and responsibilities, including the right to visitation and the responsibility to pay child support.

The adoptive parent must undergo a criminal background check. A home study, typically required in other types of adoption can be waived in these cases by the Department of Human Services.

The entire process can take up to six months.
